Kay Musical Instrument Company is a musical instrument manufacturer of the United States, in operation from the to present day. Kay offered their first electric guitar in — five years after the Rickenbacker Frying panand the same year as the Gibson ES However, the Kuhrmeyer-owned Stromberg-Voisinet brand had produced the Stromberg Electro even earlier, inmaking the short-lived model arguably the first commercial electric guitar. Inlater president Henry Kay "Hank" Kuhrmeyer joined the company, and inwith the help of an investor,  he bought the company and started producing electric guitars and amplifiers.
The invention of the archtop is currently credited to Orville Gibsonwho carved the top and back of a guitar into an arched shape as opposed to using flat pieces of wood. Both high- and low-end guitar manufacturers rushed to market archtops of their own, and many of the guitars they built are still readily available on the used market. Yet as amplification became a viable option for performing musicians, acoustic archtop production drastically diminished to the point where only a small number of makers maintained these designs in their catalogs.
